I LOVED LOVED LOVED all of your comments on the Living room - LOVED! And any more you can share on these I would so appreciate!
I wish I was kidding but this is the kitchen - one word OY! I have to paint this white - HAVE to!
Screaming for a makeover! I wish I could paint this white and throw on a drum to cover up the ancient light fixture! PS - Does anyone know where I can find a massive lazy susan - this table is toooooo big I spend all night doing 360's by the time I sit down to et my family is already finished.
I'm noticing a theme in the house of a bit of Spanish in Mexico influence. Not Spain, but rather Spain's influence in Mexico. I visit Mexico a ton and you should visit some of the boutique Mexican hotel sites to get some color/style ideas.
ReplyDeleteOnce you get white in the dining area it will be such a difference. As far as a lazy susan. My sister-in-law couldn't find one big enough, so she had a piece of wood cut out in a large circle and adhered to the biggest lazy susan she could find. As long as the cut out isn't gigantic it works.
This house is so lovely!!
Are you able to make changes? or do they need to be cosmetic. As far as the lazy susan you can go to Home Depot or Lowes and by a wooden round in a 30in. and add a lazy susan to it and finish it in whatever size you like. I had a recessed flourescent light in my kitchen and I did an easy makeover that realllly makes a difference in the look of my 70s kitchen, you can see it here

Love your backyard, I can see why this house is going to be a great rental for you!! Kathysue
Would you feel comfortable replacing the lighting in the kitchen temporarily? It wouldn't cost much to put up a new fixture and replace the original when you leave. If you are going to be there for a couple of years you might as well enjoy the space and make it your own.
ReplyDeleteLove the brown and white tile with the orange. Doing the same mix in my bedroom right now...without the ceiling light that is...
ReplyDeleteOK -- Kitchen -- paint the cabinets (OY is right!) + new cabinet hardware (the drawer pulls aren't bad, but the cabinet pulls are.) Maybe get a temporary stainless steel backsplash to mute the effect of the tiles? (It might not be as bad once the cabinets are painted -- Apartment Therapy has great ideas on temporary backsplashes.) And kill the curtains over the sink.
ReplyDeleteDining Room -- Can you paint? If you can, then paint the wainscoting, and totally replace the light fixture. Even if you get an IKEA fixture, it's totally worth it.
Is it ok to paint the cabinets white there? if so, go for it! Some new drapes for sure, and new cabinet hardware. You'd have a whole new kitchen. Maybe get some colorful cushions made for the dining chairs or slipcover, just something to break up all that brown!
ReplyDeleteassuming you have to live with the orange cabinets, orange and navy are a great combo. Update the kitchen shades, get some navy accessories for the kitchen (rug, vases), navy cushions for chairs?
ReplyDeleteIf you are allowed to paint the cabinets, definitely painting them white will make a huge difference! The tile might actually look fine with the white cabinets. I would ditch the curtain in the kitchen for a simple matchstick blind and anything you could do to that lighting in the kitchen would be the ultimate. The dining room would look lovely painted with the wainscotting and below done in white. If you can't paint, then adding white slipcovers on your chairs will brighten things up a lot. And find a cheap fixture even at IKEA to swap out what's there - an easy job and worth the small investment! :)
ReplyDeletei saw a lazy susan at ikea this weekend, not sure about the size of it though. and if you can paint, it would make a world of difference!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would leave the cabinets whatever color that is, change the hardware, paint the walls white and take down that window treatment, change out the light fixture over the table and put some thin cushions on the chairs..just simple moves.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that ceiling. How high is it? Can you drape sheers over it and create a cabana look? Anything to hide those lights!
ReplyDeleteOverall, such a gorgeous space! Not that I play tennis, but I would totally try to play there.
O.k. hope it's not too late but this is what I would do if I were you (and to stay on budget): get rid of the ceiling squares. Seriously, don't you agree?;) Second, paint all the walls a beautiful satin white color, leaving these vintage style (I think it's hard to tell) tiles to speak for themselves. Also, paint the cabinets white if you can.Almost like a black and white look but add a punch of color in the dining room. Which color? look inside your closet and pick one. Good luck.
ReplyDeletepost some pictures.
