4 important Pillow Rules and how not to commit pillow Overkill!

There is such a thing as pillow overkill - Here are some great rules I found written by Carla Jordan Via Elle Decor  where she quotes
Heather Kearsley Wolf, designer and president of Kearsley, International, Ltd. on the Pillow Do's and Don'ts

On a twin bed, instead of a standard pillow, add one king pillow because it spans the width of the bed; and one to two accent pillows.

Not This - No Comment

For a full size bed, Wolf recommends two standard pillows, two standard or Euro shams and one to two accent pillows.

Not This

Queen beds can easily hold two queen pillows and two queen shams, plus two to three accent pillows or a single bolster.

On king beds, a good combination is three standard pillows and two king shams, plus three smaller accent pillows or three standard pillows with three Euros.

What is your pillow pet peeve?

  1. Suze, great post and this post goes along perfectly with the post I did today on The demise of the duvet!! I like my pillows stacked like in the mertroplitan life image. It just feels the best to me. I do put a sham that is very tailored in front sometimes. I prefer a poufy duvet with a sleeker look, I have Hotel bedding and I usually keep other beds white and simple. Kathysue

  2. wonderful post. I have two twins in a spare room and I NEED to do the oversized pillows. thanks for the inspiration!

  3. Hi nice post...since I am looking for new bedding and bedroom ideas. Love the first one for a boy, so handsome and elegant! This is a great site..glad I found it. Please check out my new blog if you have a minute....its about the building of our dreamhome as well as my love for decor and lifes pretty things! Think you will like it..let me know. Thanks!

  4. Oh, I'm a reformed pillow over-accessorizer. It was so ridiculous to have to move all those pillows each night and put them back the next morning.

  5. My pillow pet peeve is when they are scratchy!! Pillows are meant to be comfy in my opinion :)

  6. Have I told you how much I love this series? So fun. My pillow peeve is definitely pillows propped up against the headboard and running half way down the bed- too much is never a good thing.

  7. Great post! I am learning a lot from you.

  8. Great advice. My pillow pet peeve is unadorned accent pillows. I do not like the cheapy pillows at discount stores that just have a simple seam going around. Add some welting, braiding, fringe, tassels, flange or ruffle...anything to give it personality, PLEASE.

  9. As always, great advice and a post to keep in the save file! My pet peeve is the pillow that looks like it's been cleaved by an axe (see accent pillows on your first Don't bed) - so unnatural and uninviting.

  10. This is funny post - great to point out what seems obvious!

  11. I sleep with two pillows, but hate too many pillows on the bed and finding a place to put them. My Aunt goes overboard at her house and I can never put them back in the same elaborate way when I'm sleeping over.

  12. Hi there,
My name is Nicola and we are working on a TV show in the UK and would love to use one of your images for too many pillows in our show. Do you own the copyright for them and would that be ok? My contact details for more information would be
